Finally, A New Computer!

For the last.... too many years I've been running the same old computer. The thing is a beast. It runs stuff that it likely shouldn't, but lately it's getting hard and harder as new software comes out designed to run on more up to date hardware.

That computer currently is...

Athlon XP 1800+ (1.55GHz)
Abit KR7A-Raid
Crucial PC2700 DDR
Radeon 9600TX
SBLive
WD 80gb and 120gb Harddrives
DVD-rom and DVD-ram drives

I've put together a new computer, only thing I'm missing is the video card due to it being on back order.

New computer is...

Case - Antec Three Hundredd Mini Tower
PSU - Antec Earthwatts 650W Power Supply
Motherboard - Asus R.O.G. Crosshair III Formula
CPU - Athlon II x2 250 Dual Core 3.0GHz (Temporary, will upgrade to a quad core Phenom II X4 645 Quad Core 3.5GHz in a few months)
CPU HSF - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev. 2
RAM - OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 / 1333MHz 4GB (will upgrade with 2 more sticks to 8GB in a few months)
Graphics - Radeon HD 5770 850MHz 1GB 4.8GHz GDDR5 (will be purchasing a 2nd card for crossfire)
Audio - SupremeFX X-Fi
Harddrive - WD Caviar Black 640GB SATA
Opitcal - Samsun SH-S223C DVD Writer SATA

Here are a couple of quick pics from my phone, I'll post better ones once i get the system fully up and running.

We were getting a few odd PHP errors, so I decided to upgrade the CMS to the latest version - Without even thinking whether the 3DXL theme would work - Which it didn't.

Guess I'll be spending the next week chugging through CSS (:cry:)

I've been getting close to filling my old server for quite a while - I've been archiving stuff to external drives, and upgrading drives, but it's gotten to the point where I can't really fit much more inside the case;

{img src=show_image.php?id=90}

It was essentially just an old workstation - P4 3Ghz, Abit IS7 Mobo, 4GB DDR400, 2x 80GB Mirrored for OS, 2x SIL3114 Soft RAID controllers with 4x 500GB WD RE connected to one, and 4x 1TB WD RE2 connected to the other. PSU is a Tagan 1300W and the case is a Supermicro SC760. It's running Server 2000.

It has been very reliable, but has always been a bit of a bodge. The "RAID Controllers" are cheap and nasty so I've always mirrored everything, which meant i only had 3TB of usable space. The IS7 motherboard doesn't have any PCI express slots, and it feels wrong putting a PCIX card in a PCI33 slot. The case isn't really big enough - I could wait for 2 1/2" drives to reach a reasonable capacity, but I think they'd still ba a lot more expensive than 3 1/2" drives.

I decided to donate my old server to my Dad - That way he gets a new toy to play with, and I can keep some of my important stuff like wedding photos backed up somewhere else.

That meant I had to start from scratch on my new server.

The Specs;
1x Areca ARC-1260 16 Port SATA2 PCI Express RAID Controller with 1GB Cache and Battery Backup.
1x Intel S5000VSASATAR Motherboard
1x Intel L5335 2Ghz Quad Core CPU
4x Crucial 4GB (2X2GB KIT) 667MHZ DDR2 240PIN
3x IcyBox Icy Dock SATA II 5 bays
1x Tagan 1300W BZ MODULAR 80% ENERGY EFFICIENT PSU
2x Western Digital 150GB SATA150 10000RPM Raptor for OS
1x Western Digital 160GB SATA150 5400RPM for VMWare
1x Western Digital WD RE2-GP 1TB 5400RPM for Downloads
10x Western Digital WD RE2-GP 1TB 5400RPM for Main Storage
5x Seagate Barracuda NS 1TB 7200RPM for Backups
1x Lian-Li PC343B Case

I'll be splitting the 10 WD drives into two RAID5 arrays, and the Seagate drives will also be running in RAID5 - So 12TB of Storage (:mrgreen:)

Piccies;

Just finished watching the Austrailian Grand Prix - Fantastic race. The removal of traction control made things really interesting, although the new rules regarding refuelling during saftey cars needs rethinking - 4 minutes without being able to refuel is just too long for a Formula 1 car, and I can see a lot more Barrichello type incidents happening.

There was also a very funny soundbite on UK TV where Coulthard threatened to "beat three colours of ****" out of Massa - Hopefully it will turn up on youtube, but I'm sure I can rip it from my hdd recorder if need be.

Did anyone else see it?

''edit - You can hear Coulthard's comments [tiki-download_file.php?fileId=82|HERE]''

New 3DXL Server

Our web server has been on it's last legs for some time now. The dual Athlon MP 2000's with 1GB of RAM may have been sufficient when 3 years ago, but it really isn't too happy now.

Luckily, our main Web server at work also needed a bit more oomf, so a few weeks back I replaced it with a nice big eight core system with 16GB of RAM and 8 Raptors - It's pretty quick. As a result, I had the old motherboard, processors and RAM going spare.

The new 3DXL server is not going to be overly cutting edge - the 2 64bit Xeons are only single cores with HT running at 2.8Ghz, but they should make for a noticable improvement over the old Athlon MP's which only ran at 1.67Ghz. Add to that the 8GB of RAM which is currently in the post, and it should speed things up quite nicely.

It also means that I can turn the old 3DXL webserver into a dedicated game server.

The new server will begin it's weeks worth of stability testing as soon as the extra RAM has arrived. I'm also waiting on a new Tagan Modular PSU so I can keep things nice and neat the the chassis. I've dropped an old Antec server PSU in for the time being, and took a piccie this afternoon;

{img src=show_image.php?id=76}

I know it's not the most exciting of piccies, but it will look nice when I drop it into my 7' server rack......

In the short term, I'm thinking of turning the old webserver into a Call Of Duty 4 dedicated server - That's the game I'm playing at the moment, but feel free to suggest alternatives.

So how was everyone's 2007?

Mine was pretty damned good - I became a Daddy in July, so my little girl just had her first Christmas (:biggrin:)

Gaming wise the year ended on a high - Call of Duty 4 rocks, and Crysis has been fun so far.
