It's been 8 long years since Valve announced it would be creating a sequel to Team Fortress - The Class-Based
? Half Life Multiplayer Mod.
Well the wait is almost over - At 8AM GMT today, the official Beta of Team Fortress 2 was released. Unfortunately, if you want to play, you'll have to fork out $45 for the "Orange Box"; a Game package which includes Half Life 2, HL2 Ep1, HL2 Ep2, Portal and Team Fortress 2. Those of you who already own Half Life 2 and/or Ep1 will be pretty miffed - and rightly so, at having to pay for these two games again. Especially when Valve should have paid us to play the waste of time that was Ep1. And rather than give us existing customers money off this or future packages as compensation, they have instead said that we can give away our new copies of HL2 and Ep1 to a friend.
Wow - Thanks for your generosity with OUR MONEY valve!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyway - Back to Team Fortress 2. It looks pretty good, and runs pretty well on my PC at work. The menu does take 4 1/2 months to appear, as it's one of those 3D menus that they used in HL2 - Pretty pointless for an online game, but this is a beta, and I'm sure they'll get rid of it for the final release.
So should you buy it? Well that's up to you - The game itself looks very good, and the two minutes I got to play it before work this morning were pretty impressive. The orange box also includes Portal, which I think could be one of the best games this year. But Valve seem to be more interested in screwing existing customers out of their money at the moment, and I'm sure that if you wait a few months you'll be able to pick up TF2 and Portal for less than $10 each.
If however, you never got around to playing HL2, then this could be a great bargain - $45 will get you around 40 hours of single player action, and two very interesting multiplayer games.
